A few years ago, I asked our best employee (we had only one) to make up a batch of Midnight Blossom—a delightful blend of Ti Kuan Yin oolong tea, jasmine, and Australian lemon myrtle.
Off he trotted to the warehouse, found the box marked “oolong tea” and got blending.
Only… that box also had a very, very large bag of white tea in it.
Not knowing any different, he made a MASSIVE batch… with white tea.
Time. Stood. Still.
He looked crushed. I panicked (internally). But I knew this wasn’t the moment for drama—it was the moment for tea. And friendship.
So I smiled, flicked on the kettle and said: “Let’s try it.”
We brewed it. We sipped it. And it was absolutely divine.
We named it something uninspiring like “White Tea with Jasmine & Lemon Myrtle”, sold the lot, and moved on.
Until recently, a customer emailed: “Do you still have that white tea with jasmine and lemon myrtle? It was heaven.”
So we made another batch.
And this time, it got the fancy name it deserves:
We did consider naming it Sir Kennington, in honour of Ken—the wonderful soul who made the blend by the most perfect mistake. (Still not off the table.)
But for now, Petal & Myrtle it is.
Happy brewing!
